When replacing the surface beats buying new tables

A worn top on a sound base is the most common reason a dining room looks tired, and the cheapest thing to fix. Bases outlast surfaces by years, because the damage happens where plates, glasses and cleaning cloths land.

The arithmetic is straightforward. Refinishing a forty-cover room with new surfaces at £50 to £55 each costs £2,000 to £2,200. Replacing the same forty tables complete at £99 costs £3,960. The saving only holds if the bases are still level, the columns are not wobbling, and the fixing plates are undamaged, so check those before ordering.

It is also how you change a room's look between concepts without touching the layout: swap wood effect for concrete effect and every base stays in place.

Checking a table top fits the base you have

This is where replacement orders go wrong. Three things have to match.

The fixing pattern. Bases attach through a plate with bolt holes in a set pattern, and a new surface has to be drilled to suit or arrive pre-drilled to match. Measure the plate and the hole spacing on your existing base before ordering.

The maximum size the base carries. A single column pedestal is rated for a smaller surface than a double column, and an oversized top on an undersized base tips when someone leans on the edge. The rating is listed on each table base product page.

The shape and size. Square, round and rectangular surfaces are not interchangeable across a floor where tables push together for group bookings.

Finishes compared

Finish Price Suits Watch for
MDF laminate (dark walnut, espresso wood grain) £50 High-turnover daily service Edge wear over time
White and black marble effect £55 Interior-led venues, feature covers Water rings if left wet
Grey concrete effect £55 Industrial and modern interiors Shows dust on dark tones
Industrial patchwork £55 Rustic and eclectic rooms Batch-to-batch pattern variation
Rustic wood effect £55 Traditional pubs and brasseries Finish match across a batch
Dark brown commercial £55 Neutral rooms, mixed seating Marks visible on matt finishes

Which finish suits which room

MDF laminate at £50 is the working surface for high-turnover sites. It wipes clean, takes plates straight from the pass, and costs least to replace when one gets marked.

Marble effect at £55 photographs well and reads as a step up in an interior-led venue. It shows water rings, so staff need to dry rather than leave wet.

Concrete and industrial patchwork at £55 hide daily marking better than either, which matters on floors where forty surfaces are visible at once.

Wood effect at £55 suits traditional and rustic interiors, and disguises edge wear longer than a plain finish.

Ordering, sizes and volume

Prices shown are per surface as listed on 17 September 2026, with size and finish options priced per variant. Order two or three above your table count as spares, because finishes shift between production runs and a later replacement in a mismatched batch is more visible than a worn one.

Send your base type, fixing plate measurements and the sizes you need, and Great Albion Furniture will quote against current stock. For a new fit-out rather than a replacement, complete restaurant tables work out cheaper than buying parts.

FAQ

Can I fit a new table top to my existing base?
Usually yes, provided the fixing plate pattern matches and the base is rated for the size. Measure the plate and bolt hole spacing on your existing base, and check its maximum surface size, before ordering. Bases that wobble or sit unlevel should be replaced rather than re-topped.

Is it cheaper to replace the top or buy a complete table?
Replacing the surface is cheaper where the bases are sound. Forty surfaces at £50 to £55 costs £2,000 to £2,200 against £3,960 for forty complete tables at £99. If the bases are damaged or unlevel, the saving disappears.

Which finish is most durable for a busy venue?
Concrete effect and patchwork finishes hide daily marking best. MDF laminate is the easiest to clean and the cheapest to replace. Marble effect looks strongest but shows water rings, so it suits rooms where staff dry surfaces between covers.

Are these surfaces suitable for outdoor use?
Laminate surfaces are indoor products unless the product page states otherwise. Standing rain and frost swell the core and lift the edges. For terrace and pavement seating, specify a surface rated for exterior use.
