How to choose a table base

Three decisions settle it, and the first one is the only one that causes failures.

Match the base spread to the top, not to the room

A base holds a top by leverage, not by weight. The further the top overhangs the base plate, the more force a guest leaning on the edge applies to the fixing point. Undersized bases are why tables rock, and no amount of levelling fixes a base that was too small on day one.

The working rule: single column bases suit smaller tops, and once a round top passes roughly 80cm or a square passes 70cm, the load wants a wider spread — a cross foot, a four-star, or a twin column carrying the top at two points.

Rectangular tops over about 120cm should run two bases. A single base under a long top puts every elbow at the end of a lever. Size the base from the top first, then browse our commercial table tops if you are replacing both.

Single column or twin column

Single column bases free the floor under the table, which matters when guests sit at all four sides and staff sweep nightly. They suit two and four cover tables.

Twin column and double bases carry longer tops, bench runs and communal tables. They cost more and they restrict legroom at the centre of the table, which is the trade-off for the stability.

Finish decides the environment

Black powder coating is the default for indoor dining, and it hides scuffing better than any other finish in a busy room.

Gold and brass-effect finishes carry the design in rooms where the base is visible rather than hidden under linen. They mark more visibly, so they belong in rooms where tables are wiped rather than scrubbed.

Powder coating also protects the metal underneath. Once it chips at a foot, the steel below corrodes outward from that point, which is why a chipped base in a wet-mopped room degrades faster than the same base in a dry one.

Which base suits which room

Cafes and fast turnover. Single column bases in black. The floor stays clear for cleaning, the finish hides daily scuffing, and a damaged base is cheap to replace without re-specifying the room. Pair them with our cafe tables.

Restaurants with mixed table sizes. Single columns for the two and four tops, twin or double bases for anything rectangular over about 120cm. Buying one base type for the whole room is the usual mistake, and it shows up as the long tables being the ones that rock. Complete tables are listed under restaurant tables.

Hotel dining and design-led interiors. Gold column and sculpted bases, where the base is part of what the guest sees. Pair with a top that presents uncovered.

Outdoor and covered terraces. Cast iron and steel with intact powder coating. Check the feet every season, because a breached coating in UK weather ends a base faster than any load does.

What to confirm before ordering

Five checks save a return.

  1. Top size and shape, measured rather than assumed. The base is specified from the top, not the other way round.
  2. Fixing plate and bolt pattern. A replacement base has to match the existing top's fixings or the top needs re-drilling.
  3. Column height. Dining height and poseur height are different systems, and a base bought at the wrong height cannot be adjusted into the right one.
  4. Levelling feet. Adjustable feet are what stop a table rocking on uneven floors, and uneven floors are normal in older UK buildings.
  5. Quantities with a margin. Order two or three above your table count so a damaged base is swapped rather than re-sourced from a discontinued line.

If you are replacing tops as well, weigh an old top and a new one first. A heavier top on a base specified for a lighter one is the other common cause of an unstable table.

Trade orders

Send your table count, top sizes and shapes, and Great Albion Furniture will quote against current stock and confirm which base carries which top. Volume pricing applies on larger orders.

FAQ

What size table base do I need?
Work from the top. Single column bases suit round tops up to roughly 80cm and squares up to 70cm. Above that, specify a wider spread or a twin column. Rectangular tops over about 120cm long need two bases rather than one.

Are cast iron table bases better than steel?
Cast iron carries its mass low, which resists tipping when a guest leans on the table edge. Steel is lighter and easier to move for cleaning. Choose cast iron for stability under heavier tops, steel where tables get repositioned often.

Can I buy a table base without a top?
Yes. Every base here is sold on its own, which is the usual route when a top has been damaged or a room is being refreshed on existing tops. Confirm the fixing plate matches before ordering.

Do table bases work outdoors?
Powder-coated cast iron and steel bases are suitable for covered outdoor use, provided the coating stays intact. Inspect the feet each season and treat any chip, because corrosion starts where the coating breaks rather than on the sound surface.

What height are commercial table bases?
Dining height bases pair with standard 75cm tables. Poseur and bar height is a separate specification. Confirm the column height on the product page against the tables you already own before ordering.
